Resident artist Marta Becket staged dance and mime shows there from the late 1960s until her final show in February 2012. Then Beckett started work on the ceiling, which took another two years and was completed in 1974. Amargosa Opera House and Hotel is a historic building and cultural center located in Death Valley Junction, in eastern Inyo County, California near Death Valley National Park.
It took four years to complete the murals on the walls. Her solutioncover the blank walls with people. Borax was processed and shipped from there until the borax industry declined in the 1960s.
But the high rating that I gave is because Marta Becket bought it and painted murals all over the hotel, but especially all over the opera house. It's on a national register of historic places. There were many performances I gave when no audience came at all, she recalls, but I proceeded to perform anyway. This hotel was built in the 1920's when the borax mine was still in production. She would paint an entire audience on the walls of the theater. Renaming it the Amargosa Opera House, she presented her first performance there in 1968 in front of 12 adults and a smattering of kids and grandkids. Working in the opera house cleaning up after a rainstorm, Marta had a flash of inspiration. "I really wanted to give my students the experience of performing in this particular venue because it is such an incredible piece of history and Marta Becket is a true artist who found her calling and transformed a dusty, abandoned theatre into what has become a world-famous landmark," said Jones.įrom Becket's website: "The audiences consisted of locals and curious tourists, and sometimes no one came at all.
